Loveland Elks Lodge 1051 Lodge Room Meeting Room Dinning Room Club Room Basement Office |
Loveland Lodge #1051 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is a Fraternal Organization chartered October 31, 1906.It was thus, that in the year 1906 a group of prominent Loveland citizens decided that our community should have an Elks Lodge. The application for a charter was made by Geo. W. Foote, B.G. Kelly, Jay Galligan and thirteen others. On October 31, 1906 a charter was granted and a new lodge was immediately started. There were 72 Charter members, all their names are inscribed on that document which has and always will be hanging on the walls of our lodge room. During the intervening years between the lodge’s inception and about 1926, we had rental quarters on the second floor of the Association Building. That building was on the west side of Cleveland Avenue south of Fifth Street and north of the alley. While some members were talking of building or buying a new lodge home, it was discovered that the Lovelander Hotel building was for sale and could be bought for minimum amount of cash. The hotel was bought and the lodge voted to move immediately. Temporary club room facilities were set up in the kitchen of the hotel and lodge meetings were held in the dinning room. All of this took place while the remolding program was in progress. Previous to the time of the hotel purchase we had acquired the lots where the Post Office on Cleveland now is located. The U.S. government wanted the lots, we wanted to sell, which we did.
During the time of the terrible flu epidemic, Loveland did not have sufficient hospital facilities to care for the stricken citizens. Loveland Lodge came to the rescue by turning their lodge room into a temporary hospital staffed with nurses and supplies. This relieved the situation and resulted in the saving of many lives. Loveland Lodge’s charity and relief work has continued on through the years to help crippled children, worthy students, hospitalized veterans, scores of youth building programs without regard to Elk membership, race, creed or color.
Every year the lodge sponsors a Christmas party for all the children of Larimer County.
We are still rich in the heritage our forefathers left for us. We still strive to raise money for charities and to aid the less fortunate. It is with great pride we observe Flag Day and all the precious meaning behind it. We will always try to be there for individual and community needs.
While adapting with the changing times, the Elks have never strayed from the cardinal virtues enunciated by Vivian and his associates over a century ago. Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity continue to guide its members, who cherish good fellowship as much as those Elks a century ago.
